Video processors (also known as 'quads') are used to record and/or view more than one video camera (or other source) on a single VCR and/or video monitor.  Most common video processor systems are capable of handling up to 4, 8 or 16 cameras at once, and most are capable of also viewing a single image at full screen when desired.

Video switchers are used to sequentially switch between video cameras at a fixed rate, as well as displaying a single image at full screen when desired.  They can also be used in manual mode to view specific camera images at full screen, when desired, and some units have the ability to act as both a video processor and a switcher, depending upon the user's requirements.

Both types of systems are available with include alarm inputs, that when activated by an appropriate sensor enable the processor or switcher to bring the alarm activate camera image to full screen and then switch back after a specified duration, or when the alarm event is over or another alarm is activated.

Some video processor and switcher units also include built-in on-screen time and date and/or camera title generators, and some have built-in digital motion detectors, as well as on-screen programming menus.
